27,628 inhabitants, of whom 32,36 % reside in towns and 67,64 % - in rural areas. Of the total, 48,5 are men, and 51,5 % - women. Ethnic descent: 99 % are Lithuanian, 0,5 % - Russian, 0,5 - of other descents.

9 sub districts, 17 post offices, a bus station, a railway junction, a hotel, 5 pre-schools, 10 elementary schools, 13 schools of basic education, 7 secondary schools, a gymnasium, 4 groups of special development, a center for work with mentally deranged youth, an art school and its branch, 14 cultural centers, 9 catholic churches, 2 houses of worship of other confessions, 2 museums, 27 libraries, 400 archaeological, historical and cultural monuments, 2 health care facilities, 4 public stock companies, 102 closed stock companies, 437 individually owned companies, an agricultural enterprise, and 8 companies of other status.
