Population

19,572 inhabitants. Of the total 46,21 % are men, and 53,79 % are women. Ethnic descent: 87,3 % are Lithuanian, 6,9 % - Russian, 2,1 % - Latvian, 1,2 % - Byelorussia, 0,4 - Polish, 0,1 % - Jewish, 0,1 % - Tartar, and 1,9 % - of other descents.

City facilities

A sub district, a post office, a bus station, an airport, tourist information center, 20 hotels, 140 companies offering recreation and holiday services, 5 pre-schools, 2 kindergarten-schools, an elementary school, a schools of basic education, 4 secondary schools, 3 additional study centers, 2 cultural centers, a Catholic churches, 3 houses of worship of other confessions, 3 museums, a library, 29 archeological, historical and cultural monuments, a sport center, 2 health care facilities, 5 state owned companies, 32 public stock companies, 460 closed stock companies, 1370 individually owned companies, 9 agricultural enterprise, and 44 companies of other status.
